Cherry

A bit of History
Cherry hill is Mississauga's oldest surviving house. Joseph
Silverthorn, a United Empire Loyalist brought his 16 year
old bride, Jane Chrisholm to the Cooksville area in April
1807, where he built an 18 x 20 log cabin. Joseph and Jane
had 14 children : 9 daughters and 3 sons reached maturity.
They were among the first white children to be born in Toronto
Township. Cherry Hill was started in 1815 and completed and
occupied by 1822. It was named for the cherry trees that flanked
the driveway from the gate to the barn, and covered a distance
of a mile to encircle the homestead.
Here
at Cherry Hill, white man and redskin shared food and shelter.
The Silverthorns always welcomed the Indian tribes (13 in
the area) who were their neighbors.
Three daughters remained at Cherry Hill after their parents
died, Gussie, Jane and Helen. Gussie Silverthorn left the
house , land and contents to a favorite nephew in the early
1900's William Stanislas Romain, thespian. His mother was
a Silverthorn. He was an actor, dramatic artist and vocalist.
Mr. Romain was thought to be an eccentric and dressed oddly
due to his profession, which he seemingly took seriously.
He apparently didn't appreciate his inheritance, for it was
after his taking over the Silverthorn homestead that the house
was let go to gradual ruin . He went off to New York and then
a Miss Lindsay's family rented the house during his absence.
They took over in the early 40's and like most people who
rent, felt that Romain should be responsible for repair. The
house gradually deteriorated, until the front veranda was
down , and a gray pallor clung to the unpainted interior,
and only Miss Lindsay was left.
The house was moved to its present location in 1973 and restored
to its original splendor. Cherry Hill House was opened as
a restaurant on the night of Halloween 1979. The lower level
of the house in the home of the Duke of Marlborough a truly
authentic British Pub.
